History

Susan Perry Sensei has studied Aikido since 1977. Her training over the years has earned her the rank of Rokudan (6th degree black belt). To this day, she continues to expound Aikido’s many virtues through the many vehicles listed on her Vision page.

Susan and her late husband created Musubi Dojo in 1981 which closed in 2014 due to his death. But Susan continued teaching Aikido for the next 10 years in on-going classes offered through the parks and recreation program of Claremont, California. This Aikido program exists as a part of Aiko Institute, a NPO Susan created in 2004. It takes place at Claremont’s Alexander Hughes Center.

After the covid pandemic Susan became concerned about the survival of Aikido dojo across the globe since many dojo owners found it difficult to stay open when students could not meet to train. For this reason, Susan decided to devote her time to writing which could reach much larger audiences than she could in a single class. Her painting which she exhibits in local galleries also promotes the ideas of Aikido. You can see Susan’s activities in the Events section. Susan has passed the teaching duties of the Aikido class to her senior student: Daniel Tran.

Aikido Classes

Daniel Tran is a Sandan in Aikido and is a very qualified instructor personally trained by Susan. He teaches Aikido on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7-9pm at the Alexander Hughes Center.

Aikido is a Japanese Budo. Students learn how to balance, center, and to keep themselves safe from attacks. In class we may practice with bokken (wooden swords) and jo (wooden spear). In each class students stretch out and begin to learn how to move to keep safe on the mat. Breathwork and simple meditation skills are introduced and used in Aikido.

Those interested in classes at the Claremont Dojo can contact Daniel Tran.
